The Home Herb Garden

in Herb Gardening

The home herb garden is one of the best ways to begin the gardening adventure.  Herbs are relatively easy to grow and for home use require minimal space.  Of course, like most of us once the herb garden is planted and produces for one year, the new gardener is hooked.  Secondly, and from a purely economical standpoint, herbs are one of the most expensive items we purchase in the grocery market.

More importantly, herbs are best when they are fresh.  Even dried herbs, such as those purchased in a retail environment have a tendency to lose their flavor after a short period of time.  How many times have you, as the cook, looked on the herb rack for a particular herb and had no idea how old the product was?  It happens to most of us who buy processed herbs.  The truth is that old herbs just don't have the same kick as fresh ones.

Some herbs are perennials.  Others are planted each year.  Regardless of the planting, if there is only room for a few plants in one's garden or on the patio, it is strongly suggested that herbs are the best place to start.  (There is always room for a single tomato plant, too.)  Anyway, growing herbs is fun, adds a wonderful aroma to the area, and will improve the taste of each meal.

Whether the decision is made to grow a window box of herbs or a special little kitchen garden, or to plant an herb garden or mix herbs into the vegetable garden, a garden without herbs is lacking in aroma, color, and taste.

A little goes a long ways.  Do not over plant.  We suggest that you plant enough to have fresh herbs during the season and enough to dry for the cold months.  Consider the savings and consider the vibrant flavors.  Start with a plant or two and add to the home herb garden each year.

Select from our favorite herbs.

Basil

Borage

Chamomile

Chervil

Chives

Dill

As one can tell from our selections above, not only are the herbs worth growing for their fresh taste, they add a touch of beauty to the garden, large or small.
