Folding Tomato Cages

in Tomatoes

Folding tomato cages are worth their weight in gold.  In fact, our choice will be worth the cost for years to come.

Tomato plants need support as they grow and bear fruit.  Of course, there are all sorts of supports for tomatoes.  We have previously shown the tomato ladder.  It is one of our all time favorites, especially for tomatoes that grown quite tall.  Besides, they just look good.  They are generally recommended for the gardener who is only growing one or two plants.  Our recommendation for those gardeners who are growing quite a few plant is the use of folding tomato cages.

We have been using this type of tomato cage for several years.  Before that we did what most gardeners do.  We went to the local WalMart or local hardware store and purchased those cone shaped wire cages that had little parts of the cage that stuck into the ground.  If we produced a good bearing plant, it either outgrew the cage or the weight of the tomato plant with the fruit tipped the cage over --- most often damaging the plant as well as some of the fruit.

The folding tomato cage shown is made of galvanized steel and will hold a full grown plant loaded with fruit.  What we really love about this folding cage is that another one can be stacked on top of it.  Sometimes we are surprised by how tall our tomato vines grown and how much fruit they bear.

What makes this a good one time investment is that it is sturdy enough to support the plant and at the end of the season, it folds flat until next year.  This is a definite must for anyone who takes his tomato plants seriously.
