Tofu texture is a fine point of the product, but many people seem to have strong opinions regarding this. These are matters of individual preference, but folks can be pretty vociferous about them. Even children growing up in vegetarian homes, start to make fine distinctions about tofu and to express opinions.

The texture of your tofu, for lack of a better term, comes in several options. Soft tofu is pretty flexible and does not always stay together well. Medium tofu is more substantial. For those who like something a tad more substantial, semi firm tofu may be ideal. Even beyond part-firm tofu, we have the type known as firm. It is easy to see which style shoppers at your market prefer, because these are the packages that will disappear first off the store's shelf in the refrigerator or produce section.

Package presentation may vary, depending how many tofu fans live in your town. Most often we see tofu coming in small plastic tubs with a plastic covering. This is usually available in the store as a great item at a good price.

To open the tofu container, pierce the top plastic covering with a sharp knife in a place or two. Do this on the side of the package. Then tilt the package and let the liquid flow out. This liquid can be reserved for later use, or for pets to hydrate their food.

After you have removed the liquid, open the top plastic.

Now carefully slice the tofu. This again is a matter of preference. Some people prefer thin, and some like it thick.

Place the tofu slices on to an indoor grill or panini press. You can spray the grill with vegetable spray in advance if you find this is necessary to keep the slices from adhering to the grill.

You can cook your tofu til brown, or until just barely warm. It is an altogether easy operation.

Having tofu in your kitchen and cooking it is simple and fast. You can eat it plain, or top with a variety of sauces, or you can add the tofu pieces to most any recipe as a meat substitute.
