
Today First Lady Michelle Obama with elementary school children began preparing a plot on the White House lawn for a vegetable and herb garden.
As a gardener, I could not be happier to see a return to our roots. Of course, I am not wanting to go back to the horse and carriage days, but a family garden is one way the American family, an English family, or any other family can begin to take control of their lives.
No matter where you live in the world, food costs are rising. Many of us are facing unemployment and other financial crises. At the same time food safety has become an issue in America with lack of oversight and imports that are not properly regulated.
No matter the reason for you and your family to begin a garden plot, there has never been a better time. Container gardening is a great way to start if you have limited space. For those of us who live in rural areas there is always room in the backyard to begin a vegetable garden.
For those of you who read Maya's blog, The Gratitude Journal, you are aware that our neighborhood has begun a community garden in an area of town that has limited resources. Admittedly, the neighors who live around the block where we started the garden were slow to approach us. However, one by one they came onto the porches to watch and eventually curiosity got the best of them. Today they are working with us to create a sustainable garden that will provide herbs and vegetables for their neighborhood.
If you live in an area that does not have sufficient land in the backyard to grow enough food for your family, perhaps you could get together with neighbors who realize the need to grow vegetables this year and rent a small plot of land. Not only will you have sufficient vegetables and herbs for a year, but you will have the time to spend with your neighbors, working together for a common cause.
It is estimated that in the United States an investment of about $70.00 in seeds and garden necessities will generate approximately $600.00 in food products. The savings on food costs is impressive, but in our neighborhood we have found the sense of community is equally rewarding.
