Solar Power for the Greenhouse

in Announcements, Community, Enjoy!

I suppose in truth this is an advertisement. But, I am posting it only because it works!

Recently, a group of high school kids more or less adopted some of us older folks. In fact, they seem to have become enamoured with the greenhouse. It's a neighborhood thing, I suppose.  While I'm not going to go into detail because the story can be found on The Gratitude Journal, I am proud of these teenagers.

They first started hanging around when the "tomato crisis" was in the news.  I can't explain exactly what happened, but it is safe to say that these kids have restored my hope in the future.  Anyway, these kids discovered that greenhouses and growing food is a rewarding experience.  Additionally, they have come to realize the benefits of a community garden.  I'm sure there will be some discussion of that in the near future on The Gratitude Journal if I know Maya.

These kids are learning about "going green."  And, they are teaching a bunch of older folks about going greener.  It is a marvelous combination of the enthusiasm of youth and perhaps a little wisdom of age.

These high school kids purchased the plans for building a solar panel.  Since their purchase, they have built the solar panel and installed it on my greenhouse.  At this time, everything that requires power to operate the greenhouse is running on solar!  I have been extremely impressed with the kids and with the solar power.

The program the kids purchased is from Earth4Energy.  There is a link to the site at the bottom right of this site.  I believe the cost for the program is somewhere under $50.  None of the older people... the AARP card carriers, as Maya likes to call us... believed the program would work or that a solar panel could be built and installed for less than $200.  Actually, our panel was constructed for far less.

Our greenhouse is fully functional, using solar power from panels built at home.  In fact, we have been so impressed with the ease of building the solar panel that we are now building a much larger greenhouse and already planning the solar panels for it.

So, first of all, I would like to say that speaking from experience, the cost of the Earth4Energy program is worth every penny spent on it.  Additionally, we are expecting a major decrease in our power bill in the months to come.

Secondly, I would like to refer anyone who is interested in solar power to the Earth4Energy site.  Please click to the site through one of these links here or through the banner at the bottom right of the page.  The kids have signed up with the program and are attempting to earn enough money to begin a community garden in an area of town where there are many underprivileged people who quite often visit our Community Kitchen.

All of us "AARP card carriers" are doing what we can to promote the kids' project.  That said, any proceeds the kids get from the sale of the Earth4Energy plans is directed to a good purpose, feeding the elderly and the homeless.

And, by investing in solar power, you will be taking a small step in the right direction.  After all we need to do what we can to help save the earth, cut our energy consumption, save on our individual energy bills, and help others at the same time.
